Before the Sydney Opera House, there was this. Designed in 1947 by Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect whose father drew ships for a living, the Utzon JU1 carries that same fluid, nautical logic in miniature. Smooth, rounded, quietly monumental.
In lacquered metal and available in a range of considered colours, it hangs just as naturally above a minimalist dining table as it does in a richly layered bedroom. Some designs age. This one simply endures.
